Ahh baby clothes! The mere thought of it makes most of our ovaries burst. But it can be so easy to stock up on things that we don’t really need. Today I’m sharing what worked for us and what went straight to the donate pile! Read on for more!
Now that I’m pregnant with number 2, I feel like things are going to go a lot smoother during that early prep stage. For one thing, I already own most things I need.
And second of all!? I have a pretty good grasp as to what works for baby, and what doesn’t. Especially when it comes to clothes.
If you guys followed my first pregnancy at all on social media, you’d know that I bought my fair share of random baby stuff that was just plain cute. No joke, I bought size 0-3 month rain boots from Baby Gap. Rain boots for a one month old?! Like what was I thinking!??
Unfortunately that wasn’t my only mistake (but it was the silliest one thank God).
Here’s my list of things that just didn’t end up working for us. And what did 😉
Things I’ll be staying away from this time around
1. Baby Shoes
Like I said guys, rainboots 😉 For the first 5 months Aren pretty much only wore these amazing slippers from the Gap that I adore. In general, babies should be barefoot at home to help develop the soles of their feet. So constantly putting shoes on isn’t a good thing. Aren really only started to wear shoes when he was around 5 months old and even then we really only enforced it when he started walking. I quickly learnt that a comfortable baby is a happy baby and that means comfy feet!
2. Fashion Sweaters
Mainly for sizing purposes. A lot of the sweaters I had gotten for Aren in those early months just didn’t fit right because he was either too tiny, or his head wouldn’t fit in the holes. Cardigans were great because they didn’t require us to put them over his head. As were sweaters that had one button on the front- these were clearly meant to help new parents put on awkward clothes on a child!
3. Shirts that don’t have snaps for those early months
Once Aren was able to sit unassisted those became a lot more user friendly but those first few months?! Definitely not! Babies are slouching more on their swings and boppys at that stage and I found that the shirts that didn’t have snaps would just ride up and the poor kid’s entire belly would be exposed. Once again, not very comfortable or practical, no matter how cute. Onesies with snaps are your best friend for sure! For me that included this adorable star tee (pictured right below) that I had picked up as a 0-3 month option. Didn’t use it once!
And things I’ll be stocking up on:
1. All the Pajamas
I never really understood those mom’s whose babies wore pjs all the time- until I became that mom! Probably about one month in I realized how much more comfy he was in his one piece pjs. Always warm with no skin left out to be cold, easy to change come diaper time and perfect for doctors appointments. Now I know there’s a debate between zip pjs and ones with snaps but I honestly love them both. The zip pjs are way easier to put on of course, but during the winter time the snaps are more comfy for the baby in my opinion. Why? Because with the zip pjs, baby’s chest is left cold during diaper changes. The only exception to this is the zip pjs that have the two way zip. Now those are amazing!
2. Kimono Style Tops
These tops are perfect for those first few weeks until the umbilical cord comes off. We bought them both in short sleeve and long sleeve and used them constantly. They do mainly come just in white but that worked for us!
3. Soft Baby Leggings
In particular this pair from Old Navy or this pair from Carters. Aren still pretty much only wears these two styles of pants. Why? Because they’re so comfortable and soft! I didn’t want to force him to wear jeans or more rigid looking pants just because they’re cute! I want him comfy and for him to move around with ease. The Old Navy ones? He has had them from size 0-3 all the way to now, 12-18 months. They’re the best!
Am I missing anything?! Would love to know what you guys didn’t get any use out of and what is on constant rotation!!
